The Keurig single cup coffee maker is one of the greatest home appliance inventions of recent times and the entry level Keurig B-40 is a very good brewer.

The Keurig B-40 coffee maker allows multiple people to select the kind of coffee they want without discussions about what the brewed pot of coffee will be.

We researched many units in the single serve coffee maker category. As in all things, you can't look only at one faction of the topic, you have to consider the consumables as well.

One of the things that convinced us to purchase the Keurig coffee machine was the Keurig filter unit that allows the use of ground coffee as opposed to the Keurig K-Cups.

The Keurig B40 coffee maker seems to be built very well. It is large but seems to be reasonably stout. The lever for opening the filter area is pretty thick plastic and feels sturdy. While most parts are plastic they do not feel flimsy and appear as though the Keurig coffee maker will last for a while.

One of the things that we really liked about this unit is the water resevoir on the side of the machine. This allows a quick look to see if the water level is adequate instead of having to lean around to see the back of the unit as is necessary with the Tassimo. This side compartment can be removed for filling at the faucet or simply by pouring water directly into it.

K-Cup insertion and removal from the Keurig B-40 is a breeze. The lever is easy to pull up to open the compartment. You just drop a K-cup into the filter / coffee holder and then push the lever back down. It has pleanty of leverage actio so it closes easily and is fool-proof.

Removal of the K-cup from the Keurig B-40 is just as easy as there are two indentations on the sides of the compartment that allow easy grasping of the sides of the K-cup. You just pull it out and throuw it away. Now, these K-cups are a concern to our 'environmental minds' but we will address the green component of the Keurig in a moment.

Cleanliness is amazing. Removal of a used K-Cup doesn't leave anything behind. No coffee grounds to wipe or rinse or throw away, just the little easily removable cartridge (k-cup). I only put filtered water in mine so I;m guessing I won't have much build-up of sediments either.

Brewing is very fast. After turning the Keurig B-40 coffee maker unit on, there is only about one minute's wait while it heats up the water. Then a push of the brew button starts the process of the hot water running the the cartridge. Your coffee is ready to drink in less than a minute. Then you're ready to brew another cup.

The flavor of the coffee is dependent on what you're drinking. There are several different k-cup coffees including fair trade and organic, as well as bold for those oof us who like a strong cup of coffee.

There are also flavored coffees in K-cups out there to please everyone, even tea and cocoa are available in K-Cups.

For those of us concerned about the amount of waste generated by using the plastic K-Cups, Keurig has made the My K-Cup Filter that allows you to use your own grount coffee. Not only does this cut down on the waste, but it also is a more economical way to use the Keurig B-40.
